…as 195 years of existence is celebratedSituated at the north-western corner of the Brickdam and Avenue of the Republic intersection in the capital city of Georgetown, the St Andrew’s Kirk Presbyterian Church is conspicuous in its uniqueness, but even more engaging for its admirable durability. In fact,Buy Air Max 97 Australia, the religious venue has been in existence for almost two centuries. The almost two century-old St Andrew’s Kirk.If the recorders of history are precise in their documentation actual work on the church, which has its roots in the Dutch Reformist Movement, commenced on August 11, 1811.? However, because of financial and other difficulties, the framework of the structure was sold in 1813 to members of the Established Church of Scotland with the understanding that the members of the Dutch Reform church would be allowed to worship within its confines. Moreover, construction work,WBC Jerseys 2017, which commenced in 1816, came to an end in 1818, paving the way for the church to be established on September 27, 1818.In that very year the church was opened for public worship, giving credence to the claim that it is possibly the oldest church that has practiced continuous worship in Guyana. The church doors were of course opened during the era of slavery and the then Minister, Reverend Archibald Browne, who according to reports was concerned about the welfare of slaves, started to admit slaves as members to the church by 1821.And it was just about two decades later, 1841 to be precise, that the Church of Scotland Primary School was erected as another Minister, Reverend James Struthers, was convinced that the slaves who were freed, after much struggle, by August 1, 1838,Cheap Adidas Yeezy Australia, should be trained. Moreover, history details that during the period 1857-1863, two teachers were sent for training at the Bishop’s College which was the then Teachers’ Training College, established under a grant made available by the Combined Court. And though the church evolved over the years under the auspices of various overseas ministers, even after Guyana gained its independence in 1966, it was not until 1974 that a local Minister was appointed in the person of Reverend Oswald Allen Best.Today, the church is headed by Reverend Maureen Massiah, who is in fact the first female Minister elevated to the full status of Ordained Minister. She was appointed in September 2011 and has assumed full responsibility as Moderator for St Andrew’s Kirk,? which continues to maintain its role and its place in the Guyanese society and even further afield.Ahead of Massiah’s appointment,Adam Jones USA Jersey, the church, which has retained structural integrity, was under the control of the Government; a period that spanned 1976 – 2011.So auspicious is the age-old edifice that Massiah assumed responsibility for, that it has been recognised by the Guyana Government as not only a historic building but also a heritage site. And members of the church insist that other than regular maintenance, the original structure has been expertly preserved. Well, except for the slate roof which this publication understands was replaced just about a decade ago with asphalt shingles and the fact that the windows which were once outfitted with plain glass are now a colourful view. Some remedial works were also done on the interior and exterior of the building, but much of the original timber (balata, pine) has been preserved and the style retained. To ensure the security and integrity of the building a fence has been erected around the perimeter. However, no effort was spared to ensure the building remains in full view of the interested public. And in keeping with the Disability Act which came into effect a few years ago, the church has since erected a wheelchair ramp at its northern doorway.Worship service is conducted each Sunday, and like other churches, Holy Communion is held on the First Sunday of each month. The membership of the church has been described as a “true representation of the Guyanese community” as it relates to gender, age,Cheap Adidas Shoes Online, ethnicity,World Baseball Classic Jerseys Outlet, social, economic and political status, skills, abilities and talents. The membership, which amounts to about 700 individuals, includes residents of the lower East Coast of Demerara, the East Bank, the West Coast and West Bank of Demerara. The maintenance of the structure is ensured mainly through the support of local as well as migrated members, adherents and friends in the Diaspora. And in commemoration of its 195th year of e
